Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 26th August

The 1st's get back to winning ways and secure their safety in the A Div for next season but the 2nd's and 3rd's run into two inform teams.

Starting at Harewood with the 1st's, Capt Craig won the toss and decided to have a bowl. Lewdown started well and chalked up the half century before Alex (2-28) removed the first opener. A couple of quick wickets from Hakeem (3-22) kept the pressure on but with South African opener Visser at the crease the chance of a big score was always possible.  However Lewdown stumbled from 94-3 to 107-7 with three quick wickets from Donohue Snr (3-22) and another for Hakeem. Wrenchy (2-29) got in on the action with a couple of late wickets and Alex picked up his second as Lewdown were all out for 140 in the 48th over.

In reply, wickets fell all too regularly and at 60-5 the winning post seemed a mile away. Justin (58 no) and Wrenchy put on 73 for the 6th wicket to calm the nerves and although DI fell for 27 with 8 more runs needed, Justin and Alex saw us over the winning line.

Having faced league winners Sidmouth last week, the seconds travelled to second place Bovey Tracey with another tough task ahead of them. As with the 1st's Selly won the toss and chose to have a bowl. Runs flowed for the home side with a ton and some useful lower order batting taking Bovey up to 292-6 in their 45 overs. Sadly 53 extras were in the total. Jamie took a couple of wickets and there was one each for Josiah, Timmy and Matt. Charlie got a run out.

Our reply got off to a decent start with Ben (32) and Charlie (28) putting on 64 for the first wicket. A number of players got starts but didn't go on and we reached 185 when the overs ran out. Rob and Ciaran joint top scored with 34 each, Matt made 13 and Timmy 11.

The 3rd's travelled to Champions elect Babbacombe for another tough test. Losing the toss, we were asked to bat first and despite a decent half century from Paul (58) and 34 from Sam in a third wicket stand of 74, wicket fell regularly. Olly G made 15, Tobin 14 and a lower order flurry earned Sean 16 with JCB 11 not out in our final total of 180.

Babbacombe timed their run chase well and knocked off the required runs with 5 and a bit overs to spare. JCB took two wickets while Tobin and Tom got one each.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 19th August

A disappointing weekend for our firsts and seconds but the three triumphed at Brixham.

Starting at Sandford, we have Capt Craig's report: -

Having lost the toss Sandford elected to bat. It was a typical Sandford wicket, good for batting and the boundaries quite small even if the outfield was a bit sluggish. They had a good opening partnership which Alex broke bowling Bettis with a good delivery. We stuck to the task and at drinks were happy with the position we were in with Sandford on about 100-1.

Unfortunately we had a spell after drinks that was probably one of our worst all season. With some wayward bowling and off the pace in the field we were up against it. However we pulled some respectability back towards the end so Sandford were able to post 310-8. Alex and I both finished with 3 fors.

Batting we set about our innings really well. A good opening stand with Andy Waltz and dangerous David Ackford we showed what we can do as a batting unit. When dangerous was given out caught behind (poor decision) James Degg joined waltz and we continued to build. At drinks we were about 90 odd for 1.

We continued to bat well in partnerships and although not at the asking rate 200 - 250 was on. With some blows from Justin Wubbeling we managed to finish on 222-6.

Although disappointing not to get a result the lads battled well. 8 points and on to next week. Thank you to Bev Walter for scoring and for our ever present support.

Back at Harewood, Selly's 2nd's had the unenviable task of entertaining Sidmouth Two's who seem to win the league for fun most years.

Here's what he had to say: -

The visit of top of the table Sidmouth was always going to be a tough game for us, and losing the toss on a wet track did not help at all. Sidmouth read the pitch well opening with spin and a slow bowler. Runs were hard to come by and we struggled to find any momentum. Ben privet (13) Elliot Hamilton (26) Rob Walker (16) and Jonty Walliker (16) all plugged away trying to get us to a defendable score and some lusty hitting by Matt "Gruffalo" Draper (13) got us to 105, 40 short of what we though we needed..

It turned out we were only 10 to 15 runs short as we pushed Sidmouth into the penultimate over of the match. Early wickets were always going to be key and skipper Adam Sellick picked one up 2nd ball and Josiah Caunter bagged 2 in his spell of 9 overs 2 for 11 with 5 maidens. Sidmouth were reduced to 16 for 3 and Plympton were well in the game. Anthony Dibble (59 not out) and Saj Patinder (24) batted Sidmouth back into the game. Sadly chances came and went with 4 catches going down and a very tight stumping turned down. Had any one of theses been taken, Plympton would have been favourites to win the game. Skipper Sellick came back into the attack and bowled Saj and a little flurry of wickets saw the lads back in the game. However Sidmouth got over the line with 8 balls to spare. All in all it was a great game of cricket and a brilliant team effort by all the lads in the team. Sidmouth won the league with this result and Plympton picked up 5 points.

Also thanks to Mrs O'Higgins for a great tea and she also donated the tea money to the club. To finish I'm very proud of the team for a great fight back in the field.

Sean Mortimer lead the 3's to another fine win, this time over Brixham. His report is here: -

3s Match Report Vs Brixham 2s

Having won the toss for the second week in a row we put Brixham in to bat on what looked a pretty good wicket. Opening up with Alasdair Lambie (6 Overs 0-39), who was unlucky not to have the opening batsman caught behind off the first ball, and Sean (9 Overs 0-39) we managed to keep the scoring to a reasonable 36 from the first 10 overs. Ciaran Gray(7 Overs 1- 48) then replaced Sean and took a wicket with his first ball.

Brixham then put on a good stand but were kept in check by some good bowling from Jake Campbell Beattie (9 Overs 1-38) and Jason Degg(9 Overs 2-39). Brixham's no. 4 went on to score 120 no.

We could have been a bit better in the field but the highlight was the second catch by Rich Barker taking a stinging chance at the second attempt. Brixham ended on 240 for 5.

Our opening batsmen were Freddie Eyston and Richie Barker. Richie was out fairly early being replaced by Tobin Barker. The scoring was fairly steady for the next few overs, after which Freddie and Tobin started to score more freely eventually putting together a stand of 103. Tobin was eventually out for 26.

This brought Jessie to the crease, he and Freddie continued the scoring with a stand of 61. We then lost 3 wickets for 30 runs with Jessie getting 28 and Freddie finally getting out on 106. This left Ollie Goulder at the crease with Jason Degg, they put on 25 with Ollie the next one out for 8. With 39 runs needed from 9 overs Jason was joined by Ciaran Gray, with controlled aggression from Jason and some composed shots by Ciaran we got to our total of 241 for 5 with 3 overs to spare with Ciaran hitting the winning run. Jason ended on 43 no and Ciaran 10 no.

Overall it was a good game with Freddie scoring a great ton with the younger batsmen showing great composure during the run chase. In the field even when Brixham were putting together their main stand everyone kept their energy and remained ready for any chance that came.

We came away with 17 Points.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 12th August

Not the best Saturday with all three sides losing but the Sunday team recorded a convincing win.

We start at Oak Park where Cornwood hosted our 1st's looking to avenge their early season defeat at Harewood.

Captain Craig's match report is here: -

After losing the toss and being put into bat (had we won the toss we would have batted) we started well with James Degg, David Ackford and Dave Wrench getting us up to 60 odd for 1. But with the wicket becoming more tricky to bat on it was always going to be tough on guys coming in. So when we lost Deggy and Wrenchy in quick succession it was a blow. We just never got going again and got up to 99 all out.

In the field we knew if we started well 99 was still a way off with the wicket deteriorating. We got a couple of quick wickets but their skipper counter attacked and got a few boundaries to take a chunk out of the score. Had one of his chances gone to hand it might have been a different story. Wrenchy and senior Donners bowled well and we managed to get 5 of their wickets before the game was over. Another 40 on the board and it was really game on.

We move onto next week, thanks again to Bev Walter for scoring.

The 2nd's hosted Cornwood Two's at Harewood and after we won the toss, the day went downhill from there. Cornwood were asked to bat first and scored at a brisk rate. A ton plus for one of the Cornwood openers set the theme as the visitors racked up 237-5 in their 45 overs. There were 2 wickets for Elliot and one each for Drapes and Selly.

In reply, tight bowling and losing wickets made the chase a near impossibility. Wickets fell regularly and we reached 121-8 when the overs were all used up. Ben top scored on 31 not out and openers Elliot got 20 and Paul 15.

The 3rd's travelled to Ivybridge and lost by 28 runs. Capt Sean's match report is here: -

3s Report Vs Ivybridge 2s

After winning the toss we put Ivybridge in to bat first. With an opening burst from Billy Pitman (4 Overs 2-21) and Jonty Walliker (3 Overs 0-16) Ivybridge made a brisk start with Billy pegging them back with his 2 wickets. Jack Sellick then took up the mantle bowling 3 overs for 20. It was then the turn of Jason Degg and Tim George to slow the run rate down. They succeeded with Jason bowling 9 overs for 19 and Tim picking up 2 wickets for 18 from his 9 Overs. One of the highlights came during this spell with Billy running out Ivybridge's second top scorer with a great direct hit. JCB again bowled well with his 5 overs going for 22. Evie Privett who was making her debut for the club bowled 3 overs taking 1 for 15 including a wicket on her 3rd ball. Unfortunately at the end of the Ivybridge innings their batsman Joe Langworthy dislocated his knee and play was stopped until he was taken to hospital. The good news is that the injury wasn't as bad as first thought and he should be out for 2-3 weeks. Thanks to Jason for his help with the injury. In the end Ivybridge ended on 162 for 8.

Unfortunately our batting wasn't up to our normal standard and we were quickly 3 wickets down. Jack Sellick managed to dig in for a while scoring 7, his partnership with Billy Pitman (24) was our second highest of the game. We then continued to leave wickets with the only other partnership being between Billy and Sean Mortimer (32 no). This was unfortunately in vain with us being all out for 134 with 7 overs remaining.

All in all we fielded well, with another good performance behind the stumps from Olly Goulder and a lot of effort put in all round but we came up a bit short in the batting. Only 7 points this week.

On Sunday a fantastic 147 from 134 balls by James Degg helped the side to victory by 64 runs. 35 not out from Ben pushed our score to 228-3 in the forty overs.

In reply Ipplepen lost wickets regularly and reached 164-6 when their overs ran out. There were a couple of wickets for Jason (2-16), one for James (1-6), one for Connor (1-27) and one for JCB (1-34) .

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 5th August

Wins for both the 1st's and 3rd's but defeat for the 2nd's.

We start at Harewood where the 1st's recorded a nail biting single run win over high flying Hatherleigh.

Match report from Capt Craig: -

After winning the toss we batted first. We lost Dangerous quite early but Waltz and Deggy put together a good partnership that laid a platform for later in the innings. After Waltz was run out backing up (no luck) and Harry out LBW, Justin batted well finding the boundary on a regular basis and with support from Deggy, Alex and Wrenchy we posted 167-9 from our 50.

In the field although not getting an early breakthrough the run rate wasn't proving too much to worry about and knowing our surface our spinners would have the say in who won the game. Wrenchy, Deggy and the old man (Donners Snr) bowled well taking wickets at key times. Alex nipped a couple out and with some good catching we were well in the game.

Hatherleigh needed 11 of the final over and ended up one short on 166-8. Bit tense but it wouldn't be Plympton if it wasn't!

Thanks to Bev Walter for scoring and Mar Walter for teas, it is really appreciated. Local derby to look forward to next week!

Popping over to Plymouth College where the 3rd's hosted Tavistock and we have a report from Capt Sean: -

3s Report Vs Tavistock 2s 5th Aug

The pitch at Plymouth College was somewhat green and damp. Unfortunately Sean lost the toss again and we were put into bat. Paul (30) and Jesse (25) put on a solid opening stand of 65 in difficult circumstances with the ball swinging and seaming. Paul was the first to go in the 18th over unfortunately Freddie did not last too long middling one straight to the fielder. Jesse soon followed bringing together Jason and Jonty to put on a quick fire partnership of 37 before Jonty (12) chipped one to a fielder. Tom then joined Jason (41) who was out LBW shortly afterwards. Tom(18) then held the innings together with wickets falling at the other end. Tom was the last wicket too fall in the 42nd over. It was a good innings from him to ensure that we used most of our overs as Tavistock were giving away extras throughout, with the wide count reaching 36.

Once in the field we opened the bowling with the left arm pace of Jonty (4 overs 0-16), when he got his line right it caused a few problems for the batsmen. At the other end Sean (5 overs 0-9) kept things steady. After 9 overs Tavistock were 28 for no wicket. The spin twins of Jason (9 overs 5-31) and JCB (9 overs 4-43) dismantled the Tavistock batting. Only the No. 10 batsmen (42) played sensibly and scored some runs. He was removed by Tom, bowling him around his legs.

Again our fielding was good with the team working together to chase down the ball and catching just about every chance. Tom particularly stood out with his run saving feats on the boundary.

All in all a good day and 19 points.

The 2nd's had a tough trip to Exmouth - which is always a toughie. Exmouth batted first and posted 236-9 in their 45 overs. In reply we didn't get close.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 29th July

Heavy rain ensured that there was no play on Saturday but the Sunday team not only got a game in, but won handsomely against Ivybridge.

Ivybridge won the toss and elected to bat but two early wickets each from Drapes (2-17) and Tom (2-17) put the skids under the visitors, reducing them to 27-4. The Ivybridge middle order offer some resistance but wickets continued to fall and Ivybridge were all out for 103 off 36.3 overs. Olly M took 2-12 and a run out, Jason 2-16 and JCB 1-27. James has to have a mention as although he didn't take any wickets he bowled 5 over for a miserly 6 runs.

In reply, Jesse made 14 before falling with the score on 25 but this was the only blip to the innings as Ben (39 not out) and Olly G  (42 not) out saw us over the finish line in the 26th over.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 15th & Sunday 16th July

A déjŕ vu weekend with wins for the 2nd's and 3rd's but defeat for the 1st's.

The 1st's hosted Ivybridge at Harewood looking to make amends for their defeat at Filham Park earlier in the season.

Ivybridge won the toss and chose to bat on a decent looking strip which they put to good use chalking up early runs. At drinks they were 120-1 and were looking at posting a hefty total. Eventually Ivybridge reached 216-7 when the 50 overs were up.  Jamie took 2-33, Jacob 2-36, James 1-29 and Hakeen 1-33 and a run out.

In reply we got off to the worst possible start losing Harry and James early. Sadly wickets continued to fall too regularly and chasing the game we were 149 all out in the 45th over. Buns top scored with 30, Alex made 29, Jacob 24 not out and Elliot, on debut, 20.

The 2nd's undertook their longest trek of the season but returned from North Devon with a win under their belt and 19 points in the bag.

Capt Selly won the toss and put the home side in to bat. A couple of early wickets for Drapes and one for Selly had North Devon in trouble at 10-3. A bit of fight from the middle order helped North Devon towards three figures but a superb 5 for 40 from Jamie helped us bowl the hosts out for 128 in the 36th over. Selly took 2-14 off 9, Drapes 2-25 off 9 and Tom took 1-29. Although Tim remained wicketless his miserly bowling only conceded 8 runs off 5 overs.

In reply batting proved just as tough for our top order as we were reduced to 18-3. Again some middle order stability from Todd (a match winning 39 not out) and 25 from Po got us back on tracks. However wickets kept falling and we were 8 down when we crossed the winning line. Ciaran made 16, Tom 13 and Jesse 12.

The 3rd's went run crazy at Delgany against Ashburton. After being put in to bat, openers Paul (58) and Sam (25) put on 87 for the 1st wicket before both fell in quick succession. Ed took the game away from Ashburton with a thumping 92 off 44 and 57 not out from Jason off 32 balls helped the score along to 294. Dan was 28 not out at the end.

In reply three early wickets slowed the visitors run chase down. Opener Nicholls batted the innings for 74 not out but Ashburton ended on 179-6 when the 45 overs were up.

Jason took 2-40, Josiah 1-9 off 9 overs, Capt Sean 1-3 off 6 overs, Nith and Ed got one wicket each and Olly Smith on debut only conceded 5 runs off 4 overs.

The following day the Sunday team travelled to Babbacombe. We have a match report from our honorable President Bev: -

A great performance by Maynard's Marauders at Babbacombe on Sunday.

Neal won the toss and batted first. James Degg and Jesse Sandhu opened. First wicket stand of 109 when Jesse was out for a "patient" 27. James went on to get 87,Tom Shears 15,Sam Agnew 29 and we finished the 40 overs on 194 for 6.

After a tea ( that delighted Matt Draper because it was much more plentiful than Saturdays at North Devon) Babbacombe were soon in trouble when a pinpoint throw from Jack Sellick took out one of the opening bats.

Matt and Connor Lesslie finished 6 over spells each with identical figures of 1 for 33. Then JCB and Nithin weaved their magic (when the ball pitched and Nithin learned to catch) and ran through the rest of the batting. JCB:-5 for 19 and Nithin 2 for 26.

A really good day and a great big thanks to Neal who, after getting married last Saturday (8th July) drove from Newquay and then spent all afternoon before tea umpiring and didn't even get a bat.

The only down of the day was the bloke committing murder on the mike at the local pub! Dave Shears thought he was great.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 8th July & Sunday 9th July

Joy for both the 2nd's and 3rd's but woes for the 1st's.

The 1st's travelled the short distance to Plymstock where Craig won the toss and asked the hosts to bat. The bowlers were quickly on top reducing Plymstock to 39-6 but an unbeaten 81 from Scott Mansfield guided the tail to a respectable 180-9 when the 50 overs were up.  Hakeem took 3-26, Craig 2-22, Alex 2-33 and there was a wicket each for Jamie and Jacob.

In reply Waltz and James overcame the early loss of Dave to take our score to 77 before Andy was stumped for 47. Sadly our innings went downhill from there with James (28) and Justin (25) the only other players to make double figures. A disappointing innings ended on 145 all out.

The seconds won a real nail biter at Harewood beating Plymouth by 1 wicket. Here is Capt Selly's report: -

On Saturday the 2's hosted Plymouth in the 1st game after the turnaround. Plymouth won the toss and decided to bat. Once again Plympton's opening bowlers took early wickets and reduced Plymouth to 42 for 4 with Mathew Draper (2 for 18) and skipper Adam Sellick (2 for 22). After this wickets and runs came at an even rate until Plymouth captain Gareth Hughes came to the crease hitting 39 off 42 balls.

All the Plympton bowlers pegged away and bowled Plymouth out for 183. Elliot Hamilton took 2 for 34 and Tim George 2 for 41. The innings was ended with a run out by Todd Rossouw which was surprising after Plympton put in a below par fielding display, a very rare thing this season.

Plympton went out to bat high in confidence that comes from 2 straight wins. Rob walker (8) looked sharp pulling the 3rd ball for 4 and setting the tone only to be caught out by a ball keeping a little low on him. Charlie O'Higgins scored a brisk 14 before being caught.

This brought Ben Privett to the crease. Ben is new to the club and shows every time he plays what a great potential he is and what a huge asset he will become for Plympton CC. Ben joined Elliot with the score at 30 for 2 and the pair dug in a batted us through a sticky patch, Elliot (8) was given out by the Plymouth umpire (which we all knew was going to happen after Elliot's 104 not out at Plymouth) when the score was on 61 for 3. A small flurry of wickets and we were reduced to 82 for 5.

Still needing 102 to win Tim George joined Ben. Ben (32) who batted with great maturity and rotated the strike to allow the more experienced Tim George the ability to pick off the bad bowling scoring 37 off 35 balls and putting us back in the driving seat. Both batsman fell in quick succession and the game was back in the balance again. Jamie Bailey carried on his decent form with the bat with an unbeaten 32.

When Skipper Adam Sellick came out to bat at number 11 Plympton were 164 for 9. Some good running and an over throw gave us a 6 off one ball and a couple of hearty drives from Sellick and Plympton sneaked over the line to record their 3rd straight win and collect 19 points. We are 5th in the league only 3 points behind Exmouth.

The 3rd's travelled to Delgany to take on Plymouth and won by 5 wickets with 10 overs to spare.

On Sunday, the Sunday team travelled to Kingsbridge. Match report from Jon Goulder: -

A good effort by the Sunday League team against Kingsbridge this afternoon. Neal Maynard handed over the Captain's reigns to me whilst he concentrated on his wedding!

We lost the toss and Kingsbridge choose to bat on a pitch that looked like it had more to offer the bowlers. Conner Leslie and JCB opened the bowling and kept things reasonably tight. JCB got the breakthrough taking opener and Kingsbridge's overseas player Bhanu De Silva for 21. After this runs and wickets came at a fairly even tempo.
Despite managing to restrict Kingsbridge to 139-9, their first team opening batsman, James Westlake (batting at 8), managed to put on a total of 80 taking the total onto 204 before JCB took the last wicket.

Some great bowling today, with the highlights being:
Nithan Golpalakrishnan 4-27
JCB 2-28
Jack Sellick 2-36

Catch of the game went to Tom Shears with a low one handed catch at short mid-wicket.

Having bowled them out with 6 overs to spare, we came out to bat with high hopes. Sam Agnew and Jesse Sandhu opened and although they both looked like they were getting into their stride, unfortunately lost their wickets early on.
Oliver Goulder and Tom Shears settled in well together at the crease and pushed the score onto 42 before Tom (17) was caught out. Jack Sellick provided good support to Goulder, putting on 23 before also being caught. After Olly Maynard and I failed to provide any real support to Oliver Goulder, JCB came out and adopting his usual aggressive style set about the Kingsbridge bowlers. By now Kingsbridge had brought D'Silva into the attack. Whilst Goulder battled well against him it was too much in the end and he was bowled for a well deserved 48. The score was now on 121-7. The tail enders fought hard and managed to take the score onto 179 before the final wicket fell, with JCB bowled for a quick fire, but sensible 39 and only 6 balls remaining. So despite falling 26 runs short, this was a great all round team performance against a team with 3 first teamers drafted in. The game was played in the spirit of the Sunday League with everyone getting fully involved on both sides.

Thank you to Jesse and Drapes for helping me out with the Captaining role. Big thank you to Bev Walter for scoring and Adam Sellick for umpiring.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 1st July

What a day! A hat-trick for Plympton Cricket Club with all three side registering wins!

Starting at Harewood where Budleigh Salterton were the visitors. Budleigh's line up included Somerset leg break bowler Max Waller and Ex-Devon all rounder Trevor Anning.

Budleigh won the toss and with the recent heavy rain, put us into bat. Plympton found scoring runs hard to come by with wickets falling regularly. At the first drinks break the signs were ominous with the score on 38-4 and Harry off the field with an injury. Justin top scored with 34 and Harry returned to partner Donners when all of the other batmen were dismissed. The last pair took the score from 114 to 140 when the overs ran out.

With the sun drying the wicket, Budleigh's innings progressed relatively smoothly. Jacob and James had a couple of breakthroughs but at 108-2 with lots of over left, there looked like there would only be one winner. However when Trevor Anning  was dismissed by James for 5, things took a turn for the better for the home side. Jacob removed opener Matt Junk for 57, James bagged a couple more wickets for a handful of runs and a run out reduced Budleigh to 130-7. The visitors must still have been favourites needing only 11 more runs to win but Jacob cleared up the last three wickets to give Plympton a break taking win by 2 runs. Jacobs superb figures were 5-28 and James's were equally impressive at 4-43.

The 2nd's travelled up to Budleigh and took the points. Here is Selly's match report: -

Plympton 2s vs Budleigh Salterton 2s.

On a very warm sunny day, Budleigh won the toss and decided to bowl first on what looked a good track. Losing a wicket with the score on 3 was not the start we wanted. Making his club debut Ciaran Grey (4) put on 33 with Rob Walker (51) taking us to 36 when Ciaran was caught at slip. This brought in James Carr (49) who built on the decent start and worked towards a good total. Chris Dawe (31) batted well and we ended up 186 all out. Tim George was left stranded 11 not out as we failed to bat our overs out.

With 186 to defend early wickets were always going to be key to the game. Matt Draper once again bowled well taking 3 for 25 off his 9 overs. When Tim George (1 for 38) took a wicket in the 20th over Budleigh were 81 for 4. Opener Ian Messom who had retired hurt after getting hit on the foot returned to the crease. We thought this was the key partnership we needed to break and they went on to add 51 runs. A bowling change and skipper Adam Sellick (1 for 37) came back into the attack and got the breakthrough with Budleigh 132 for 5. Tom Richards playing 2s after a stint in the first team set about slowing the run rate. Bowling his 1st 5 overs for 13 runs, he then bowled his next 3.5 overs taking 4 wickets for 18 runs. The last wicket fell with Budleigh needing 7 to win.

Special mention needs to go to the team spirit and effort of all the lads. Matt (Gruffalo) Draper bowled, fielded and took 2 of his 3 catches well.

Ben Privett bowled 3 overs at the death with maturity and held his nerve very well. Ciaran Grey, Sam Agnew and Ben Privett pulled out some top class fielding on the boundary saving us plenty of runs and keeping us in the hunt for the win.

Thank you also to John Agnew for scoring.

A great team performance and a massive 19 points, half way through the season we sit 5th in the table with 107 points.

Well done to all the other sides on a great weekend for Plympton cc

The 3rd's hosted Cornwood 3rd's and winning the toss, invited the visitors to bat. Wickets fell regularly and were shared around the Plympton bowlers. Cornwood were all out for 144 off 35 overs. Ed took 3-22, JCB 2-7, Josiah 2-20, Jason 1-20, Evie 1-21 and Tom 1-35. Capt Sean remained wicket less but only leaked 13 runs off his six overs.

In reply, the early loss of Richie didn't hamper the run chase. Tobin top scored with a great 63 before Jason (33 not out) and Olly saw us over the line with only 23 overs gone and six wickets in hand.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 24th June

A great win for the seconds, a bad day at the office for the firsts and the thirds lose by four wickets.

The 1st's travelled north to Lewdown and had a day to forget. Having won the toss, Craig decided to have a bat but wickets fell all too frequently and at 8-3 the task looked ominous. Only Harry (21) and Capt Craig (20) reached double figures and a final total of 90 all out was aided by 21 extras. In reply Lewdown made light work of the chase losing four wickets along the way. Alex took 3-45 with Craig bagging the other.

The 2nd's had better fortune at Harewood. Selly report is here: -

winning the toss and electing to field was exactly what we were hoping to do and we did. Early on we pushed the Bovey top order hard and with some great bowling and catching we reduced Bovey to 37 for 6. A solid stand by Bovey skipper Jeremy Christopher's and George Yabsley helped settle their innings and were 92 at the fall of the next wicket. Plympton stuck hard at the task and kept nicking wickets and in the end bowled Bovey out for 151, ( A Sellick 3-16 M Draper 3-31 B Privett 2-39 S Hutchins 1-14)

Once again plympton did not fail to deliver drama... losing a couple of early wickets (R Barker 11, C O'Higgins 11 and T Barker 3) brought together Suzi McDonald (54) and Chris Dawe (44) at 53 for 3. Suzi batted with grace and drove and swept her way to 50 off 71 balls. Chris Dawe bludgeoned his way to 44 with 3 fours and 2 big sixes but sadly they fell 2 runs apart and then the drama started with 15 runs needed, Todd Rossouw was out lbw for 0, Ben Privet was run out ( my fault) for 0 and then myself bowled for 4.  This left Tim George (1 not out) and Matt Draper (7 not out) to score the last 8 runs needed to bring home a much needed 19 points.

The 3rd's travelled to Babbacombe and were asked to bat first. Rob Walker made an excellent 89 but apart from 26 from Jesse, 23 from Capt Sean and 12 from Amanda, no other batman managed double figures. We were all out for 188.

In reply, a forth wicket stand of 88 proved to be a match winner and broke the back of the run chase, taking the hosts from 91-3 to 179-3. Tom bagged three wickets, Josiah trapped both openers and there was one for Nith.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 17th June & Sunday 18th June

Caunter on a canter for the 1st's whilst the 2nd's run into a typically strong Sidmouth Two's. Sadly the 3rd's had a day off as the opposition, Brixham couldn't raise a side.

Starting at Harewood with the 1st's we have brief repost from Capt Craig: -

Plympton never do it easy! An unbelievable finish to a game fitting of the weather!

The lads did well in the field restricting a good Sandford side to 199-9. Chasing we were up against it and at 4 down for not many on the board the chase had got off to a bad start.

Enter Harry Kandampully who joined David Ackford to put in a good partnership to get us back in the game. There were some lusty blows from big H and a match winning 51 not out from Jacob Caunter was an innings worthy of winning any match. Not forgetting Tom Richards who did superbly holding up his end. We passed the Sandford total with 8 ball and 1 wicket to spare.

Thank you as always to the scorer Nicky Dawe, tea lady Mrs Caunter and everyone who helped out and or supported!

Great result!

Selly report on the 2nd's is here: -

2nd's Away vs Sidmouth.

Losing the toss for the 1st time this season on a hot day was a blow but we cracked on with it. We came up against a good Sidmouth batting line up and after losing a early wicket  (Adam Sellick 5 for 25) with a great slip catch by Sam Agnew, Sidmouth scored quickly. Stephanie Hutchins bowled very well with no reward, chances came and went and it looked like we would be chasing 350+, after the 2nd drinks break we really pulled in back only allowing them to score 73 for 7 in the last 15 overs they finished 290 for 9.

We batted well early on. Charles O'Higgins made 29 & Sam Agnew 27. A few others chipped in with runs but eventually we were 159 all out - 1 run short of another point.

Special mention to Ben Privett who on debut took 2 wickets 2 catches and scored 18 with the bat showing great patience and really fitted well into the team.

All in all I think we tried our best for 80% of the game and let ourselves down a little bit with the bat on a very good batting track.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 3rd June & Sunday 4th June

The 1st's erratic run continued with a 7 wicket defeat at league leaders Hatherleigh. The 2nd's suffered a loss at home to Exmouth and the 3rd's tied their match with Tavy.

We have a match report from the 2nd's team skipper Selly here: -

Winning the toss again Plympton invited Exmouth to bat on a warm day, we set about the task well taking early wickets Adam Sellick (3 for 25) made the early inroads into the Exmouth line up only a very good innings from Louie Morison (92) really looked settled on what turned out to be a track that offered something to all if you applied your trade to it. Matt Draper also bowled well with little reward (1 for 22), the big turning point was Adam Sellick dropping Louie Morison on 41, a sitter compared to the 2 catches he did hold in the game. Tim 'kankles' George's introduction made for exciting viewing (4 for 55) runs came and wickets fell, all good to watch from the side lines I guess, Exmouth were bowled out for 190 and then the batting began!!

Freddie Eyston (24) and Amara Carr (5) put on 41 for the 1st wicket then some miscommunication led to a run out, after that once again wickets fell regularly and we were soon 80 for 6 with only Alex Carr (50) able to impose himself, we never really got the run chase going, a 46 partnership between Alex Carr and Sellick (14) helped to pick up some important points, all in all we need to bat better and use all of our overs  (Plympton 8 points).

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 27th May

Great wins for both the 1st's and the 2nd's but the 3rd's come unstuck at home to Yelverton II's.

The 1st's had a tricky fixture at struggling Brixham who were boosted by the news that Somerset one day captain Jim Allenby was set to make his debut for them.

Here is a match report from the victorious stand in captain Chris Bunney: -

Brixham won the toss and elected to bat on what looked a decent wicket, they started very well and were 103-2 at drinks - we thought we'd be chasing 250! That brought a change in fortunes almost instantly and we took the key wickets of Allenby, Oakes and Pugh straight after drinks. They had a good partnership at the end taking them from 136-8 to 181-9, then were all out for 184. Jacob Caunter (4-20) and Hakeem Abdullah (2-32) the pick of the bowlers. 2nd innings we lost Andy Waltz and Dave Ackford in quick succession leaving us 8-2. Our innings then centered around young James Degg batting through for a fantastic knock of 73* - including crucial partnerships of 66 with me (28) and 74 with Justin Wubbeling (35) which took us to 148-5. Despite a minor wobble when Allenby came back on for one last blast taking a hat-trick along the way, Degg was there at the end to see us home 188-7 with 10 overs still to bowl.

The 2nd's hosted Torquay two's at Harewood. Here is Selly's take on the match: -

The toss was won again by Plympton and Torquay were put into bat on a sticky track. Matt Draper (1-24) bowled very well and Adam Sellick (1-29) both took wickets in their 1st overs to pile the pressure on the batting side. Plympton took wickets at regular intervals. Ross Farrer (2-20) bowled well and a very tidy spell at the end by Tim George (2-14) help us to bowl Torquay out for 155.

Now onto batting - the bit that was always going to be tough. The batting line up was hindered by availability and we struggled early losing 3 wickets for 28 runs before Ollie Goulder making his 2's debut battled away and stuck around with Ross (73) to settle the innings. When Ollie departed Jonty Walliker (27) came to the crease. Again both Jonty and Ross batted very well together and with a partnership of 89 put us in a great position to win the game. We won after losing 7 wickets in total with a few overs to spare.

A big thank you to Jon Goulder for scoring and Dave Loynes for umpiring, also a mention for JCB who came up to the 2s when asked to cover a spot that was turned down. The win gave us a massive 19 points and a very happy captain.

Another stand in captain, Jesse reports on the 3rd's defeat against Torquay: -

Plympton 3s v Yelverton 2s

Plympton unfortunately lost the toss and were sent in to bat on an incredibly damp track. Regardless of this we got off to a good, solid start against the Yelverton pace attack. Paul Hamilton was resilient against the swinging new ball until he fell for 7 which meant that Sam Agnew joined Charlie O'Higgins at the crease. Together, they managed to see out the opening bowlers which then saw the Yelverton Overseas player coming into the attack. From there it all went downhill with one scoring shot coming off his 4 overs and 5 wickets falling in the process. Charlie O'Higgins eventually fell for a good 22 with the only other resistance coming from Jason Degg who ended on 17* with the teams total on 77.

With the change of innings, the weather had also changed meaning we were going out to bowl on a now dry track with a fairly low score to try and defend. We were attacking from the start but struggled to break the opening partnership until Josiah Caunter got one of the openers in his 6th over. Josiah bowled incredibly well to keep the pressure on with only 5 scoring shots coming off his 9 overs. Plympton were bowling well but the chances didn't quite go out way with a few edges just missing the slips.

With Yelverton only needing 10 to win, captain Jesse Sandhu came on to bowl to try and get another wicket and in turn, another point. After bowling a loose one to start meaning they now needed single figures to win but after that, every ball was virtually unplayable and he soon had the opener LBW with the ball going on to crash into all three stumps, meaning we had got an extra point which could prove to be vital later on in the season but unfortunately it was not enough with Yelverton getting the winning runs the following over.

In conclusion, our batting was poor on a difficult pitch with good bowlers but our bowling was fairly good and we can definitely learn from the performance and hopefully perform better in the coming weeks.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 20th May

A tough day for the 1st's and 2nd's but the 3rd's win at Ipplepen.

Starting at Harewood, we have a match report from Craig: -

After winning the toss and electing to field we started off well nipping out a couple of early wickets. Chudleigh then put a partnership together but the lads still bowled tight lines and were backed up well in the field. Although the ended up getting 20 more than I would have hoped 150 was more than achievable with our batting. Credit to Hakeem who bowled well in his spells and also Jacob and Alex who acquitted themselves well in their first games for the 1's this year. In the chase we started well and put 20 on the board without too much to write home about. Dave then had to take time out as he was suffering with cramp but the chase was still on. At 90-1 we were on top and looking ominous in our pursuit of victory. However what can only be described as a disappointing batting collapse we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. I'm not one to dwell on results and the lads know we need to deliver for the full game not just 75% of it. We will learn from this and come back and it wouldn't surprise me at all if we get a good result away at Brixham next week. Thank you to all those who continue to help out behind the scenes it is appreciated and we hope to repay you with some good results in the coming weeks. See you all at nets Thursday!

The 2nd's suffered defeat at Exeter. Here is a match report from Selly: -

Keeping up the 2nd teams 100% record of winning the toss going, Captain Adam Sellick decided to bowl first and put Exeter into bat. Tom Richards playing his first 2nd team game of the season gave a great account of his abilities with a 5 over spell taking 1 for 9, Adam Sellick claimed figures of 2 for 44 off his 9 overs almost getting Exeter's main run scorer Sean Langford for 5 but the chance went begging. Exeter built the score at a steady pace and only the brilliant spells of bowling by Matthew Draper (9 overs 1 for 40) and great caught and bowled by Tom Shears (1 for 38) kept Plympton in the game. The introduction of Stephanie Hutchins really slowed the run rate down and she took regular wickets and finished with remarkable figures of 8 overs 3 for 36. Chris Dawe once again showed some fast hands behind the stumps taking a stumping off Adam Sellick, Plympton managed to keep Exeter to 205 for 8 a job well done..

However when we batted we sadly lost wickets regularly and never really managed to get a foot hold in the game, Freddie Eyston (23) opened and hung around trying to impose himself when possible. Other players showed a good hand with the bat including Tom Richards (15), Matthew Draper (14) who both battled away taking us to a 2nd batting point. The rest of Plympton's middle order offered very little in the way of resistance and we were eventually bowled out for 93.

Plympton picked up 6 points and will look to bounce back next Saturday

Sean's report for the 3rd's is here: -

Plympton 3s 166 ao Vs Ipplepen 2s 83 ao

Ipplepen won the toss and inserted Plympton on a track that was damp on a length at one end. The opening partnership of Charles O’Higgins (31) and Sam Agnew (25) put on a solid opening stand of 58.  We then lost a couple of quick wickets which lead to the arrival of Jason Degg (35) who put on his runs swiftly which gave us a bit of impetus for the final few overs. Jake Campbell-Beattie (13) and Sean Mortimer (27) get the runs going with Ollie Maynard ending 16 not out getting us past the 160 mark for another point.

Whilst we were enjoying an excellent tea the weather intervened and reduced the Ipplepen Innings to 37 Overs, requiring 137 to win.

Josiah Caunter (8-2-14-2) again opened the bowling and prevented Ipplepen from scoring quickly, picking up a couple of deserved wickets. At the other end Connor Leslie (4-0-9-2) was a good foil and managed to pick up a couple of wickets. The old boys in the team then took over with Sean Mortimer (5-2-13-1) and Jason Degg (8-3-25-2) keeping the run rate down and taking wickets.  Nithin Gopalakrishnan (7-0-19-3) then stepped in with some tremendous leg spin to remove the late middle order, this left us on the verge of our second victory. Then the champagne moment came with JCB bowling his 3rd ball had the final man caught by a leaping one handed catch by Charles O’Higgins.

The energy and enthusiasm of the whole team in the field was superb.

Match Reports & Teams For Saturday 13th May

A disappointing day for both the 1st's and the 2nd's but the 3rd's got their campaign off to a winning start after last week's wash out.

The 1st's travelled the short hop up the A38 to Ivybridge and were greeted with a pitch that hadn't been covered despite the heavy rain. Having lost the toss and being asked to bat first it was always going to be an uphill struggle and early wickets were lost cheaply. Buns and Justin offered some middle order resistance but the tail wagged and got our score up to a respectable 158 before the Jamie Bailey was the last man out with 3 balls left. Jamie's contribution was essential with a superb 37 runs and a stand of 73 with Capt Donners who weighed in with 24 not out.

Batting second was always going to be easier with the chasing side being able to judge the play with the weather. After rain intervened, the target was reduced to 124 which Ivybridge got for 6 down at the end of the 37th over. DI took 2-13, Donners 2-14 and there was one each for James and Hakeem.

Back at Harewood the 2nd's won the toss and deiced to bat. Despite an opening stand of 33 from Alex and Amara, wickets began to fall far too frequently and only some lower order scoring from PO (27) and Joel (13) got us up over three figures, reaching 113 all out in the 40th over.

Again rain changed the chased and North Devon got the 57 they needed for the loss of 4 wickets in the 14th over. Joel took 2-14 and Jacob and Alex picked up one each.

Captain Sean has kindly produced a match report for the 3rd's win at Ashburton: -

The 3s were up against a strong Ashburton 2s on Saturday, we were all glad to finally get a game.

We won the toss and inserted Ashburton. Tom Richards (7-1-15-2) and Josiah Caunter (9-2-18-2) opened the bowling and kept the run rate down whilst nicking out the odd wicket. Ollie Maynard (6-0-31-2) and JCB  (7-1-36-2) took over and continued to take wickets at regular intervals. Billy Pitman (5-0-37-1) took his first senior wicket to help finish off Ashburton who were finally all out for 145. The fielding throughout the afternoon was excellent with Billy and JCB particularly strong and Olly Goulder taking 3 catches behind the stumps.

Paul Hamilton and Charles O’Higgins opened the batting with the rain heading towards us along the A38 corridor, although we lost a couple of early wickets Charles (34no) accompanied by Olly Goulder (5) and then Tom Richards (12no) kept us ahead of the run rate until the rains fell after 22 overs. It was an excellent innings from Charles and a good all-round fielding performance which helped us our first win of the season.

Match Reports & Teams Saturday 6th May

The season opened with wins for both the 1st's and 2nd's and the 3rd's match was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

We have a couple of match reports from both team captains below. Many thanks to both Craig and Adam for them.

1st Team - Craig's Report: -

Great win to start the season off with a win. After the rain had left us it meant the game was reduced to 25 overs a side. We lost the toss and we're asked to bat. Walts and Dangerous gave us a great platform to set a challenging score, however with some good bowling and the loss of quick wickets we were unable to build on this and stuttered to 128. In the field we were a unit, bowlers bowled well especially with a wet ball. Young Deggy and Big H getting two vital wickets of Jack Horton and their overseas. But all bowlers bowled well and deserved the reward. Overall a really positive result everyone contributed and the biggest thing was we didn't panic under pressure. On to next week away to Ivybridge.

2nd Team - Selly's Report: -

Plymouth 2's 203 for 9

Plympton 2's 207 for 8

Winning the toss and bowling first on a damp day, Plympton set about the task well against a good Plymouth side with a run out in the first over (Jason Degg) and bowled well. Matt Draper beating the edge numerous times, then Jacob Caunter (1-40) entered the attack, he picked a wicket and settled in to a very good spell, with conditions a little wet Tim and Edd struggled with their footing which brought Alex Carr (4-31) onto bowl. Plymouth were 137-2 at drinks, we needed to wrestle back the game and stop the runs flowing. After a dodgy 1st over Alex bowled with great accuracy picking up 4 wickets which were all bowled, this allowed us to slow the run rate and get the game back under our control. Elliot Hamilton (1-24) bowled very well and at the end of the innings Plympton had restricted Plymouth to 203-9.

We got off to a flyer with a few wides and some attacking batting from Alex Carr (28), opening with Alex was Elliot Hamilton (104 not out) who batted superbly and thoroughly deserved his century. Plympton lost wickets regularly and were on the end of a few "friendly" lbw decisions. With us still needing 63 to win Edd Degg (25) went out and battered the ball to the boundary when given the chance and blocked when needed. A partnership of 41 was just what was needed and kept us right in the hunt for a win after another indifferent lbw Edd was given out and Matthew Draper (10 not out) went in and with a few subtle touches victory was close and so was Elliot's hundred. Needing 1 to win and Elliot needing 3 for a very well compiled ton, he played a delightful reverse sweep for 4 and also taking the win for Plympton, Elliot's hundred came off 113 ball with 16 x 4's.

All in all a great team effort, we stuck at it well and with a couple of stand out performances fully deserved the victory. Thank you to everyone who helped me in my first game as captain and here's to a successful season ahead.
